A theatre monologue

The first thing you notice is the almost total lack of punctuation – which seems to me very apt for what is in fact an interior monologue about a young girl’s death by suicide – a few dashes, an exclamation mark and, above all, a lot of question marks.  And repetitions and unfinished sentences.  Content and form are brought together perfectly in this text that I found deeply moving.  I don’t think I have ever read such a powerful piece of fiction on suicide as this.

A woman, Gabrielle, a French teacher in a secondary school in Royan is returning home one afternoon.  One of her students, Daniella, recently ended her life by throwing herself out of a window in her classroom.  Gabrielle senses that Daniela’s parents are waiting for her on the landing outside her flat.  But she doesn’t want to see them.  Royan. The French Teacher is a monologue addressed to Daniela’s parents and to their dead daughter. This work by Marie NDiaye has been compared to writing by Marguerite Duras.
